Exploring the next frontier of climate tech: WA to USA Green Tech Mission
In a whirlwind tour spanning Houston and Austin, Western Australia's GreenTech delegation embarked on a transformative journey as part of the WA to USA Green Tech Mission, hosted by Invest and Trade Western Australia. Over two weeks, more than 200 attendees representing 30+ companies convened across 10 events at 5 different venues in 2 cities, igniting innovation and forging new partnerships in the heart of Texas.
Houston, a hub of energy and innovation, welcomed the WA delegation with open arms. The journey kicked off at Rice University's Ion, where discussions led by industry luminaries like Emmanuel Olear and Kevin Doffing illuminated the intersection of climate tech and energy ecosystems. The Hon. Stephen Dawson MLA joined the group for a tour of Ion Houston, where delegates were able to takeaways key insights into scaling innovation capabilities and fostering collaboration across continents.
Throughout the events hosted in Houston, panels delved into crucial topics such as industrial decarbonisation, electrification, and data-driven solutions. Notable figures like Jenny Johnson from Woodside Energy and Luis Alcoser from Chevron Ventures shared their expertise, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges.
A tour of Greentown Labs and Chevron's Robotics Lab provided immersive experiences, showcasing cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of energy. Delegates on the Mission took part in lightning pitches, showcasing the best of WA innovation to International audiences and in-depth tours where participants gained firsthand knowledge of the innovations driving sustainable development across energy, mining and more.
The WA to USA Green Tech Mission journey continued in Austin, where the launch of Invest and Trade Western Australia's Americas Hub marked a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation. Against the vibrant backdrop of Australia House, Western Australian companies showcased their potential for growth in the US market, while fostering cultural exchange with First Nations peoples. Distinguished guests including, Hon Stephen Dawson MLC and H.E. the Hon Dr Kevin Rudd, Australia’s Ambassador to the United States shared learnings, and the importance of culture, collaboration and community were at the forefront of the celebration, emphasising the vital role they play in shaping our identities and connecting us to country.
Austin's bustling startup scene provided a platform for networking and collaboration, with events ranging from VIP capital factory tours to thought leadership panels on empowering indigenous entrepreneurship. The mission culminated with SXSW, the world-renowned event synonymous with Austin, where innovation, creativity, culture, and collaboration collide.
”Team WA”, a phenomenal delegation of over 40 founders, companies, and artists across tech, innovation and creative industries sectors including CORE’s Green Tech Mission and the First Nations X delegation showcased the incredible innovation and culture our region brings to the world.
