Austmine 2023: The Path to Accelerating Decarbonization and Innovation in Mining

Austmine 2023, held in Adelaide was a dynamic gathering that brought together mining industry leaders, experts, and innovators to address the pressing need for decarbonization and the acceleration of innovation.

The conference has become synonymous with the mining industry's technological advancements and innovation and this year’s conference was no different; focused on collaborative efforts, technological advancements, and sustainability practices, aiming to shape a positive and proud legacy for future generations. Over two days influential speakers and thought-provoking discussions shed light on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The Austmine Exhibition was also once again a standout. With exhibitors from right across Australia showcasing the latest advancements, innovations and technologies that are providing practical solutions to the transformation of the mining industry. It was fantastic to see so many CORE Members, CORE Start & Hot 30 Alumni and of course our CORE Innovation Zone companies exhibiting this year.

But, the highlight of Austmine was the transformations and calls to action coming from some of our leading industry figures. Austmine CEO, Chris Gibbs Stewart, set the tone by focusing on the "what" and "how" rather than the "why" of ESG and decarbonization. Recognizing that there are still unanswered questions, the conference aimed to bring collective knowledge and expertise to chart a pathway toward a sustainable future for the mining industry.

Michelle Keegan, leader of the Electric Mine Consortium, and Ingrid Oyarzún Olave, Global Sustainability Innovation Lead at BHP, emphasized the necessity of collaboration between miners and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to achieve the ambitious decarbonization targets set for 2030. They highlighted the importance of joint efforts in driving innovation and achieving meaningful progress in reducing carbon emissions.

Alan Broome, Chair of Austmine, challenged the mining industry to overcome the "first to be second" mentality. He called for greater willingness to adopt and showcase innovative technologies and urged companies to embrace a forward-thinking approach to become leaders in all areas of mining technology and sustainability practices.

Austmine 2023 highlighted the significant work being done towards decarbonization and the exciting innovation driving transformation across the weekend.
